SPFSIG
Grant Information:
During the Fall of 2007, The cornerstone coalition was awarded a substance abuse grant by the name of Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant (SPF SIG). The grant is for $150,000 a year for the next three years. The primary focus of this grant is underage drinking.
The SPF-SIG program is one of SAMHSA’s grant programs to help grantees build a solid foundation for delivering and sustaining effective substance abuse services. SPF-SIG grant programs will implement the Strategic Prevention Framework so that we can:
-
Prevent the onset and reduce the progression of underage drinking,
-
Reduce substance abuse-related problems in communities such as teenage pregnancy, STD’s , and alcohol related car crashes.
-
Build prevention capacity at the State and community levels.
The idea behind the SPF SIG is to use the findings from public health research along with evidence-based prevention strategies to build capacity within the community and the prevention field. This in turn will promote resilience and decrease risk factors in individuals, families, and communities.
The Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) works to bring multiple funding streams from multiple sources to create a community-based approach to substance abuse prevention that cuts across existing programs and systems.
Strategic Prevention Framework implements a five-step process known to promote youth development, reduce risk-taking behaviors, build assets and resilience and prevent problem behaviors across the lifespan.
The Strategic Prevention Framework implements prevention by:
1.
Profile population needs, resources, and readiness
2. Mobilize and/or build capacity to address needs
3. Develop a comprehensive strategic plan which links strategies to outcomes
4. Implement evidence-based prevention programs and infrastructure development activities
5. Monitor process, evaluate effectiveness, sustain effective programs/activities, and improve or replace those that fail.
This five-step process provides an effective prevention framework that can be embraced by multiple agencies and levels of government that share common goals
